Top 5 Best Cherry Blossom Spots Kyoto, Japan (VIDEO)

When it comes to cherry blossoms in Japan, Kyoto is regarded by many as the quintessential place to see them. This is my top 5 list of best cherry blossom spots in Kyoto.

5. Heian Jingu Shrine

Known as the best spot for weeping cherry trees in Kyoto, this famous shrine is a must-visit. The garden makes for a scenic walk and entry costs ¥600. There is also usually an evening concert at the start of April. During that time, they’ll do cherry tree illuminations.

And whilst you’re there, why not take a stroll along the nearby Okazaki Canal which has several sakura along its banks or take a tour boat for ¥1200.

4. Maruyama Park

Located behind Yasuka Shrine is one of the most famous spots for hanami or cherry blossom viewing in Kyoto. Maruyama Park transforms from a peaceful park to a lively venue with yatai food and drink stalls and even a dining area for pop-up izakayas. It’s fantastic being able to sit right under the sakura like that and it has evening illuminations.

3. Hirano Shrine

Established in 794, Hirano Shrine is an extremely popular hanami spot. Offering even more dining space than Maruyama Park, it boasts an impressive canopy of sakura and a lively atmosphere. You can even cook your own yaki niku BBQ at your table. You can enjoy iza-kaya or Japanese pub food or street food from plenty of yatai food and drink stalls. This shrine also has free nightly illuminations.

2. The Keage Incline

I love the Keage Incline because it’s such a unique spot for cherry blossoms. This abandoned track was once used to transport boats from the Okazaki Canal to a higher elevation up until the 1950s. These days it’s a prime spot for cherry blossom viewing and Instagram selfies.

1. The Philosopher’s Path

If you’re at all familiar with Kyoto, you probably saw this one coming. The Philosopher’s Path, aka Philosopher’s Walk is renowned by many as the best cherry blossom spot in Kyoto. And I have to agree. Stretching for 2kms, this scenic walk will take you along a quaint canal, stone footbridges and lots of gorgeous sakura. It is without a doubt my top pick for the best place to see cherry blossoms in Kyoto.

That’s my top 5 list of the best places to see cherry blossoms in Kyoto. Before I go, I have to give an honourable mention, a number 6 on the list if you will, to Kiyomizu-Dera. This elevated temple has one of the best views of Kyoto and has some gorgeous weeping and standard cherry trees.
